When you’re in business, its easy to get caught up spending too much time doing the work, and not enough time growing the business.
When this happens, you’re not doing anything about getting more leads because you don’t have time, and you’re worried what will happen if the work stops coming in. You know if this situation continues the business won’t grow and you’ll be doing the work forever – its just like going to a job each day.
To start to turn this situation around, we recommend that you start the ‘20% factor’ – spend a minimum of 20% of your time working on GROWING your business. This can be a challenge, especially for tradies. We call it the Tradie Trap. They are so busy doing the work and not wanting to sacrifice a job to spend time on the business, that they stay being a tradie forever. While this suits some, the ambitious business owner soon gets frustrated.
By making this change and having a 20% Factor focus, you will start to see your business results change, however, this is only the beginning. The time you spend on growing should start to increase as you increase sales, as you’re able to employ people to help you in areas of the business to expand capacity. You will gradually be able to increase your time to 40%, 50% and onwards.
How do you take the step to having the 20% Factor in your business:
1 Make a list of the sales and marketing strategies that you are using in your business to get new clients.
2 What is one thing you can do this week, on each of those strategies to increase leads?
3 Allocate 20% of your time each day (or week) in your calendar and schedule in these activities.
4 Take action – discipline yourself to follow your ‘Growth’ Schedule.
5 Measure the results each week – number of leads per strategy.
Why is this important?
If your business isn’t growing, its going backwards
You will go from owning a ‘job’ to having a business growth focus
You will break the cycle of ‘doing the work’ which has to happen for you to achieve your Next Logical Step and move forward to where you most want to be.
So make a commitment to YOU to take action, and make a change – Be Unstoppable!
