There are 3 Departments to any business and each department is your responsibility – welcome to small business!
Many business owners find that they are not making the progress that they want. We suggest they should take a look at the 3 Departments. Simply put, they are:
Admin – looking after the money
Operations – doing the work
Sales & Marketing- bringing in the business
In a small business, the business owner is wearing all the hats, although you generally find that really they have one department as their strength, one they are ‘so-so’ at, and one at which they are simply terrible! If the weakness isn’t bridged or fixed, it will be the downfall of the business and will cause big problems, possibly even business failure.
If the business has plenty of cashflow, its easy to hire or outsource expertise to fix the weakness. Often there isn’t cashflow available so what do you do?
‘Find a better way’ is one of our TEWAY Mantras, and it is the only way to move through the daily challenges that face a small business owner.
There are 3 things you can do to bridge a weakness:
develop a process
hire or outsource people and skills
improve your skills and knowledge
Here’s some suggestions on how to bridge your weakness in any of the 3 Departments:
1 If your weakness is Finance and Admin:
hire a bookkeeper
search on the internet for help in understanding your figures
speak to a mentor who is in business and ask them to explain your figures to you
outsource a VA – websites such a elancer, upwork, fivr
2 If your weakness if Operations:
this is rarely the case but there is always room for improvement in your customer service
3 If your weakness is Sales & Marketing:
The first cause of business is SALES – nothing happens until someone sells something – and 90% of people who go into business have this department as their weakness. This is a problem. Quite often we have seen business owners hire a sales person, thinking that this person is going to be the answer to everything. Wrong! If you are tight on money and hiring a salesperson, I would be asking why is this salesperson not earning $150k plus? Can they actually sell? What is the demonstrated proof of this?
YOU are the best sales person for your business – like it or not. You have the passion, the drive, the need, the understanding of your product to get sales. When you know how to sell for your business and get results, only then will you have the cashflow to hire someone decent, AND you will be able to train them with your processes that you know work!
So learn all about selling – read books, talk to people, google it and then get out and do it and improve your craft every day. Your business success depends on it.
