We will never move forward in our businesses, if we are not continually working on growth – but I’m not just talking about business growth, I’m talking about the growth of YOU. Your business is where it is right now, because that’s where you are. If you don’t change, your business won’t change.
Here’s something that we use when talking with clients which is very simple, but it can start you on the path to where you need to focus your attention for real growth in your business.
To keep it really really simple there are 3 departments to any business:
- Finance and Admin
- Sales & Marketing
One department we’ll be really good at – it’s the sum of our years of experience working in a job or could be the reason we started our business in the first place. For example, we were really really good at IT managed services, so we decided to start our own IT managed services business. So that means the department we are really good at is OPERATIONS.
One department we will be ok at, and one department is our utter and complete WEAKNESS. We are terrible, don’t have much experience and could even not like doing it.
So have a good look at this list – which is your strength (pat on the back!). Which are you so-so at, and which is your weakness? Remember, RESULTS are your only judge so don’t kid yourself here. If you say ‘Sales and Marketing’ is your strength but you aren’t making enough sales to pay the rent, perhaps you need to re-examine that answer.
It is very logical, that whichever department is your weakness, is going to hold you back in your business until you overcome that weakness.
The critical department in your business is SALES AND MARKETING. You can hire people or outsource help to look after Finance and Admin, you can train people in basic operations to help you, but if you aren’t the best at SALES AND MARKETING your business product or service, at least in the early days of growing your business, it is always going to hold you back from getting wealthy.
So what are some LOW COST ways of overcoming your weakness department:
- do a course – that suits your budget, there is always something you can learn (its also a great way to network at the same time!)
- research on the internet – there’s lots of free stuff out there
- learn from the experts – read as many books as you can, you can spend time with these experts just by sitting down and reading their book
- talk to other small business owners – how have they dealt with this, what works for them
- work with a mentor – who has been there and done it and can guide you through
- outsource it! (but understand it first so you can manage it – you can’t outsource total responsibility at the end of the day).
Whatever you choose to do, start moving today. If you are working on your weakness you are working ON your business and that means ‘growing your business’. Anything you learn is also ‘growing you’ and you need to change in order to get your business to where you want it to be. You will be a different person to the person you are today when you get there! That’s part of the journey!
So the key to growth is always be working on a weakness. It may be uncomfortable, it may be more fun to work on the stuff that you’re good at but if you make it a priority to consistently work on improving a weakness, you’ll be amazed and astounded where you and your business will be in 12 month’s time.
